Although most of us have tendencies to choose a dog breed because it’s cute, when it comes to a family dog around children please consider temperament as a deciding factor. There are obvious generalizations made about specific breeds however knowing the individual dog’s temperament and the genetic history from which it came, is even more important. Typically a dog’s temperament is shaped around its personality which is molded by past experiences and genetics.
Whenever possible talk with the responsible dog breeder that knows the dog’s family history and ask questions about temperament and dog health issues. Learn all you can about these issues before deciding whether this dog is right for your children.
Dog size can be a problem in some cases because some small breeds are more fragile and cannot handle the roughhousing that occurs around children. Typically Chihuahua’s or Toy poodles are a poor choice for this very reason and often become frightened by chaotic activity or noise. This could result in nipping or outright biting in order to protect themselves.
Some small but sturdy breeds are better suited around children like Beagles or Pugs because they tolerate noise and rough housing much better. It is import when choosing a small breed for children that they are strong, sturdy, tolerate noise and have an even temperament.
Many medium size breeds like Golden retrievers and Labrador retrievers are excellent choices to have around children. These dogs have a loving temperament and absolutely love to play with children. They are very tolerant of noise and can handle a lot of roughhousing with kids.
Therefore our four most popular choices are:
o Labrador retriever
o Golden retriever
o Beagle
o Pug
These are not by a long shot the only dogs to consider having around children, but are certainly the most popular today.
A very important issue to consider while choosing a family dog for your children is that no dog should ever be left unsupervised around young totters. It is the parent’s responsibility to safeguard the child and the dog from intentional or unintentional harm.
