The body shape of a ferret is ten times longer in length than it is wide. This gives them the look of a weasel, though they are not directly descended from them. Archeological findings have produced near complete skeletons of the Steppe Polecat in Alaska indicating that the Black-Footed Ferret found in was evolved from them. During the late 1800′s the fur trade was big and booming. Indians would often use furs to trade with settlers who passed through. During that time there was no regulation of how many coons, ferrets, or rabbits one could shoot. In fact there were several sanctioned contests challenging hunters to collect as many pelts as they could to win the purse (jackpot).
