To start, raising a puppy really begins before you actually adopt. It is extremely important to get a little dog information before you raise a puppy. Be sure to educate yourself about dog breeds and know what type of canine fits your life style and living environment. We have much more breed specific information at our blog if you are interested.

Once you bring home your pup be sure to have a kennel or at least a crate with a doggy bed. This will be the pup’s safe place and will help the dog training that soon follows. Next allow your new puppy to become familiar with its new surroundings and do not let them venture outside their boundaries. Yes boundaries, training starts early and even though they may not understand at this point, they will very soon. Puppies are very curious animals and they want to get into everything.

One of the first training exercises a new puppy and its owner will need to learn is house training. Over the years there have been many techniques developed and here is what we use, crate training. The idea is dogs that sleep in a caged crate usually do not potty where they sleep and are encouraged to hold it until they are put outside. We also recommend using a routine to potty train your pup. Set predictable times when the pup is taken out to potty. We recommend early morning, after each meal, and few times throughout the day, and again before going into the crate for the night. Soon you will have a well house trained puppy sure to let you know if you forget the routine.

All dogs learn at different speeds so it is important that you have patience, care and compassion while training your new family member. Never use violence to punish, this leads to fear and possible aggressive behavior problems with some dog breeds. Not to mention it is cruel. Always be firm not loud when communicating your commands. Your voice is one of the most important tools in teaching your puppy to adapt to the limitations you are placing on it.

It is important to give positive reinforcement when your pup does a good job. Take the time to pet and tell your pup how good he is and how much you love him. At special times give him a treat for a job well done. When your pup is bad or not doing what you tell them you must also let them know. Be firm and strong in your approach, let them know they are being bad. In reoccurring situations teach them there are consequences for bad behavior. Put them in their crate for a short period of time.

Dogs are social animals and will try to dominate, or control the group. If you want a well behaved dog you must train as you are the dominate pack leader even when they are puppies. Take the time to train effectively as you are always the leader. Also take the time to socialize your pup, get them used to people and other dogs. Monitor their behavior and make adjustments if needed immediately when they occur. A well trained pup will make a fine canine companion in the years to follow.

We certainly hope this advice helps you with raising a puppy. By taking the time to learn a few dog training techniques and basic dog information you will soon know exactly how to raise a puppy. We hope the experience leads to a long loving relationship with your canine companion.

3 Reasons to Adopt a Dog

When a person or family decides to add a new pet in their home, most of us would usually think of buying one from a pet store or breeder. Few consider checking their local pet shelter or pet adoption/rescue agency. Before you decide to head out to your nearest pet store, below are the 3 reasons why you should think about adopting a dog.

Save Lives

If you want to save pet lives then adopting one from a pet shelter or pet adoption agency would be the best choice. Although pet shelters and agencies try their best to keep their pets alive and put them in loving homes, some of these pets are euthanized for the fact that there are more homeless pets and only a few loving homes that are willing to take them in. When you adopt a pet, not only are you saving a life but also opening a spot for another pet in need.

Cost

There are a lot of people who misconstrued that animals in pet shelters have bad behavior. The truth is that these animals end up in shelters since their owners abandoned them due to the inability to take care of them or as a result of divorce or relocation. And since these animals have been previously owned, pet shelters can ensure that these pets are safe and have received all of their vaccinations and have been spayed or neutered. There may be a cost involved when you adopt a pet however it is not as costly as when you purchase one and have to get these veterinary services on your own.

Variety

Pet shelters take in pets of all ages and breeds and whether you believe it or not, there is often a better selection of animals compared to a pet store. There are a lot of puppies to choose from as well as adult dogs that need a home. Most of the shelters have websites where you can see pictures and information about the animals that are available for adoption which then would save your time in finding the pet you have in mind.

Although many of us would like to purchase a new dog from a pet store, it is still a good idea to check your local pet shelter or pet adoption/rescue agency. Not only are you able to save animal’s lives, you might also be able to find the perfect pet that would best suit your personality.

Unlike almost all other states, employee non-compete agreements are unlawful and unenforceable in California. This protects the ability of California residents to find work where they are most skillful. It also allows California employers to hire the best and most productive work force.

The prohibition against restraints on trade, found in Business and Professions Code Section 16600, applies to anyone in California.

It has also been held to apply to employees who may be subject to a non-compete in another state, when they are seeking employment in California. This means a non-compete agreement that may be enforceable against someone in Missouri is not enforceable against them if they move to California and seek to work in the Golden State.

Although California employers are subject to this law, this only applies to their California workforce. Continuing the example, if a California based company has an office in Missouri, then the employees in Missouri are subject to Missouri law. Not California law. This makes sense when one consider other laws such as overtime and minimum wage. It is the laws of the state where one works that regulate their employment in that state. Not where the employer may be based or have other offices.

Another limitation of California non-compete agreements is that the ability to compete is not an open door to unfairly compete. This typically means not being able to take and use confidential, private, and trade secret information from a prior employer.

Ultimately then, a former employee in California is in the same position as any other competitor. They are not in a worse position by not being able to compete just as other competitors are not prohibited from competing. On the other hand they are not in a better position by being able to use confidential information from a prior employer just as other competitors are not privy to that information.

Attorney Brian Kindsvater is perhaps ‘the’ expert on California non-compete law. Brian Kindsvater offers on his legal website the opportunity to obtain a special California Non Compete Guide with over 20 pages of advice, tips, and recommendations for California non-compete employee situations.

Small canine companions are an awesome addition to any family if you take the time to choose the right dog for you. There are several things you need to keep in mind when looking for the right small dog including energy level, general health, grooming requirements and the other members in your household.

When you carefully consider the various breed personalities and match them to your lifestyle, you and your small dog will be much happier with each other.

Consider All Members of the Household

What is your family like? Are you a single adult household and lead an active life? Do you have small children? These questions and those like them are very important when it comes to choosing the perfect small dog. If you are extremely active, you will want a dog that matches your energy level. The same rule applies if you are a more laid back person.

Each breed will have its general energy level, driven by the original purpose for the breed. Hunting class dogs will be tend to be agile and full of energy whereas companion dogs are usually more easy going. Terriers, spaniels and hounds have a reputation for being the more active breeds, but you will need to carefully evaluate the energy level of each dog you are considering; there are Lhasa Apsos that excel at agility courses and Schipperkes that love nothing better than to sleep the day away.

How Much Time Will Your Small Dog Spend Outdoors?

Where will your new dog be spending most of its time? This may seem like a no brainer question but realistically some people must leave their pets outside during all types of weather because of work or other constraints.

Small dogs in general do not fare well outside in cold temperatures; however there are several breeds with heavy coats and thicker body mass, such as the Welsh Corgi to help keep them warm. Heat can also be a major issue for some breeds, Pugs and Pekingese suffer greatly in really warm temperatures.

Consider the Hardwired Breed Traits

Each small dog breed will have specific character traits, attributes that the original breeders magnified to suit a defined purpose. The more true a dog’s blood line to the original design, the stronger those traits will be.

Take for example the Dachshund; they were bred as vermin hunters and can be obsessed with digging. This could prove to be a disaster if you cherish a beautifully landscaped yard. Moreover, if your children have pets of the rodent variety, this dog or one of the rat terriers is probably not a good choice either.

Matching Energy Levels

Perhaps the most important thing to consider is the energy level of a small dog and how it fits in with yours. For example, if you have a quiet passive personality, a strong high energy dog will run roughshod over you and the entire house – a recipe for disaster.

Every dog, regardless of breed has an energy level ranging from low to very high. When a breed is referred to as “high energy” such as Boston Terriers, it only means that a higher percentage of Boston’s will be at the upper level on energy. If you are set on a specific breed, with a little patience you will be able to find the best energy match.

The General Health of a Breed

Just as with energy, each breed will have a “general” health profile that should be taken into account. Common illnesses include hip dysplasia, ectropion, epilepsy, cataracts and mitral valve disease, just to name a few.

If you are adopting an adult dog, a health check before accepting the dog will prepare you for some of the issues that may arise. Many of the adoption agencies provide a health report as standard practice. If it is a puppy you are after, your choice of breeder is key to a dogs health.

Absolutely DO NOT buy a puppy from a pet store unless they openly provide the name, phone number and address of the breeder AND you pay them a visit. You want to choose a breeder that researches and tracks the bloodlines and their specific genetic defects when mating two adult dogs. You will most certainly pay more upfront for the puppy, but good genetics could save you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in vet bills over the life of your small dog.

What Age Is Best For You?

Many people prefer to adopt puppies since they can better bond and train the dog to their specifications. However, puppies are not for everyone as they need a great deal more attention and training than an adult dog.

You might be better served by adopting an older pet if you prefer to skip the chewing, potty training and other puppy specific issues. Be careful with adult animals, especially if you have children. Unless you know the dog and previous owners, there could well be behavior problems that do not show up immediately.

Parting Thoughts

Choosing the best small dog for you is not as easy as just getting the cute one. There are many things to consider to ensure the best fit possible; take your time, do the research, and include an experienced acquaintance or professional dog handler to help you find the perfect match.

23f2

Mae Campbell is an avid small dog enthusiast who has taken to heart the challenge of training small dogs. Domesticated canines have served mankind in one capacity or another for thousands of years, and many believe that without this symbiotic relationship man would not be where he is today. As our association with these versatile animals evolves, the bar for acceptable social behavior is being raised. This means that we, their human counterparts must step up to the plate and teach our dogs the rules and boundaries necessary to be successful in modern societies.
Dog breeds that are most suitable for children are breeds that have a mild temperament and playful attributes. It is important to note that every animal including the canine has its own personality. Therefore any of our suggested breeds may or may not be the right choice for your children. All dog owners must take the time to educate the entire family about the canine. Then do the necessary dog training and child training as well.

It is paramount that parents while making the choice of what dog they wish to include in the family get as much dog information from the breeder as possible. What the bitch and the male’s history are as it relates to kids and aggression. The breeder should assist you in picking a puppy with a mild temperament, one that does not become aggressive with noise and roughhousing. Also it is very important to know and match what environment is best suited for the dog breed itself.

Another important piece of advice is that no young toddler should ever be left unsupervised with your family dog or any other dog. When the child matures and grows to understand the relationship, then is able to utilize the dog training techniques your family is providing, you may then start weaning the supervision. We highly recommend monitoring the results.

Below are our top ten choices we think you should consider and why:

1. The Labrador Retriever ranks at the top of our list. Their reputation as a fun loving family oriented canine is unsurpassed. They are most often good around children of all ages.

2. The Golden Retriever is also an excellent choice for children of all ages. They are often easy going, playful and eager to please.

3. Flat Coat Retriever’s love children and are a great family choice. They are also eager to please and train reasonably well. These dogs adjust well in many environments, so keep this in mind.

4. Newfoundland’s are extremely well suited for children. They have a sweet temperament and love children. They can handle more roughhousing than most dogs and simply go lay down when they have had enough. They always keep a watchful eye over the family and are very trustworthy dog. Environment plays a key role whether one should own a Newfoundland or not.

5. The Saint Bernard is another good choice for children. Saints normally have a very mild temperament and love children. With a little training they become devoted, fun loving companions. Again your environment is an important consideration because of their size.

6. Irish Setters are great family dogs and very good around children. They can be sensitive to a lot of boisterous activity, so keep that in mind. When they have had enough they normally retreat to the comfort of a quiet place.

7. An English Setter is a very good choice for children. They have a mellow temperament and a loving nature. With a little dog training these dogs make excellent companions.

8. Beagles are normally a good choice for children as are many in the hound family. They are usually good around children, love to play. Beagles do have a stubborn streak about them however. They can be a bit of a challenge to train at times but patience will be rewarded.

9. Pugs are normally a good dog for children. Pugs are very patient and fun loving canines that fit well in an urban environment. They do not tolerate interruptions when eating, like many canines. So keep this in mind around small toddlers.

10. The Collie is another great choice for children. They have an even temperament, very docile and gentle. These make great family dogs and are a perfect fit in many environments.

These suggestions are by no means the only dog breeds you should consider. But they are a good start in your attempt to find what breed is best suited for your children and family environment. Please take the time to make informed decisions. Remember that having a canine part of your family will require some consistent dog training. We at dog information blog are dedicated to the canine and dog lovers alike. We hope this information is useful and your feedback is welcome.

The Cavalier is a charming dog breed that is extremely friendly and thrives on human interaction. They are known to have a sweet temperament, therefore become excellent family dogs and trustworthy around children. Although this breed’s true purpose in life is that of a lap dog living its life of luxury as a companion, the breed has also been successful in the sporting field hunting small game. With a little dog training and attention these canines make wonderful canine companions for life.

The average breed height is 12 to 13 inches at the shoulder and weighs between 13 and 18 pounds. The coat is moderate in length, silky with a slight wave but no curl. The head is slightly rounded with a full muzzle and the ears are long with ample feathering. Weekly brushing is recommended with particular attention to the ears. The dogs colors are best describe as, Blenheim – a rich chestnut coloring on white, Ruby – very rich mahogany. Tricolor – black well broken on white.

Dog health issues to watch for with this breed include; Ear infections, inspect and clean ears regularly. Eye problems, knee and back problems, hearing problems and hip dysplasia. This breed is also prone to genetic heart problems therefore you should only buy these dogs from a responsible dog breeder with a proven genetic history.

The Cavalier is descended from the King Charles Spaniel that originated in England centuries ago. In the 17th century they were bred with Pugs to create a smaller breed known today as the English Toy Spaniel. In the 20th century an American in the quest to acquire the original breed offered prize money in England to anyone that came up with breeds that had the characteristics of early paintings of the original breed. With these dogs he began breeding and by the 1940′s they were given a new classification as a separate breed. They were at that time given the name Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. In 1952 the first Cavaliers came to America, however they did not gain full breed recognition until 1996 when they became recognized and started showing in the Toy Group of the American Kennel Club.

Have a great day!

Although most of us have tendencies to choose a dog breed because it’s cute, when it comes to a family dog around children please consider temperament as a deciding factor. There are obvious generalizations made about specific breeds however knowing the individual dog’s temperament and the genetic history from which it came, is even more important. Typically a dog’s temperament is shaped around its personality which is molded by past experiences and genetics.

Whenever possible talk with the responsible dog breeder that knows the dog’s family history and ask questions about temperament and dog health issues. Learn all you can about these issues before deciding whether this dog is right for your children.

Dog size can be a problem in some cases because some small breeds are more fragile and cannot handle the roughhousing that occurs around children. Typically Chihuahua’s or Toy poodles are a poor choice for this very reason and often become frightened by chaotic activity or noise. This could result in nipping or outright biting in order to protect themselves.

Some small but sturdy breeds are better suited around children like Beagles or Pugs because they tolerate noise and rough housing much better. It is import when choosing a small breed for children that they are strong, sturdy, tolerate noise and have an even temperament.

Many medium size breeds like Golden retrievers and Labrador retrievers are excellent choices to have around children. These dogs have a loving temperament and absolutely love to play with children. They are very tolerant of noise and can handle a lot of roughhousing with kids.

Therefore our four most popular choices are:

o Labrador retriever

o Golden retriever

o Beagle

o Pug

These are not by a long shot the only dogs to consider having around children, but are certainly the most popular today.

A very important issue to consider while choosing a family dog for your children is that no dog should ever be left unsupervised around young totters. It is the parent’s responsibility to safeguard the child and the dog from intentional or unintentional harm. This is best handled by good supervision, dog training and with good child training as well. We at dog information blog welcome your comments and suggestions.

Hip Dysplasia is a hereditary condition found mostly in large and giant breed dogs. Some breeds are more prone to the disease than others. It is important when choosing pets you be aware of the prevalence of hip dysplasia within the breed.

Hip dysplasia happens when the muscles and tendons around the hip joint fail to hold the ball of the femoral head securely in the hip socket. As these two bones lose contact, over time, the bone structure will change and erode away.

Unfortunately, there is no real way to prevent this from happening other than to be aware of the dog breeder’s practices. A dog born to parents with certified good hips will have less likelihood of developing the disease, whereas a dog born with even one parent with fair to poor hips are much more likely to develop the disease. Only through selective breeding practices can the disease be eliminated within a breed.

There are measures you can take to help slow the degeneration of the hip joint.

Keep the dog well exercised. Making sure the hip muscles and tendons remain strong will help to keep the hips in place.

Diet and nutrition are very important to dog breeds who tend to develop this disease. Make sure your pet does not get overweight. Carrying extra weight will put more strain on already fragile hip joints.

Ask your vet about supplements. Things like glucosamine, Omega 3 fatty acids and avocados may be of help for the osteoarthritis associated with hip dysplasia.

Above anything else, to decrease the chances of having a pet with hip dysplasia, thoroughly investigate the practices of the breeder you plan to purchase your dog from. Be certain your dog comes from parents with certified good hips. Ask lots of questions of the breeder before purchasing to find out the number of incidences of the disease in their breeding history.

For breed and kennel clubs, they hold competitions like breed shows, dog shows and conformation shows to determine whether the participating dogs meet the standards of their breeds. There are also affairs like specialty shows where only specific breeds are being observed.

Prior to the show, judges already set the standards that would serve as the criteria for evaluation. In choosing the dogs that meet the standard, the decision can be exceptionally difficult because judgments are purely subjective. So one dog is not only placed in comparison with the other dogs but it has to match all the breed standards to a near perfection.

The long list which includes the breed standard is referred to as the conformation point. There may be general requirements but the conformation point may vary for every competition. The most significant feature that is taken into consideration is the fur, followed by color of the pet, pattern, markings, color and shape of the head, healthy skin without pigmentation, temperament, behavior, structure of the teeth, color and shape of the eyes, tail, feet, grooming, gait and walking style. The list can be quite lengthy.

Just like any other competitions, dog shows are conducted on different levels ranging from local to national competitions. Participants can come from different places within the country. Most of the time, dog show competitions are hierarchical in nature. Those declared as winners of every level get a chance to earn points that would make them eligible for the next level. And finally, the dog that comes out as the winner at the highest level becomes the champion.

Champions in dog shows not only bring home the prize but will have highly valuable puppies. For breeders, this is truly beneficial because they can sell their little pups at amazingly high prices. A lot of people would go after the litter of champions no matter how high the price may be because they would want to have for themselves a pet that would bear a resemblance to the winner. And with the strict standards set during dog shows, buyers would have the assurance that the expensive puppies would also have remarkable genes.

Dog shows are not only fun for the dog owners, it is also one of the best times that dogs can socialize with each other. And these days, dog shows are becoming more popular because of the numerous advantages that they could bring for dog owners, breeders and pet dogs. It is also a very good way to show others how wonderful it is to have dogs as pets.

Dog breeding is not only an enjoyable hobby but it can be a good source of income as well. In order to become successful, a breeder should be keen on every little detail like nutrition, medical attention, good supplies and many more. Beginners don’t have to fret because given enough time, you will soon be familiar with the things that needs to be done.

A good guide that will help you in keeping track of the numerous activities is a business diary that will serve as a record of all the breeding activities of your dogs. In the event that a problem would arise, your record will surely prove to be useful. Make sure that you make notes of important details like a female dog’s heat period, the signs and medical observation, if any. You might also need a veterinarian’s help at the start of your venture.

In choosing a suitable mate for your female dogs, the male dog should undergo proper examinations with laboratory tests concerning blood and semen. Even though there are lesser reproductive problems with male dogs, you still need to consider infections, anatomical defects and low sperm production. So it would be beneficial if you can find a trustworthy stud owner. Knowing the past performance of the stud would also be a wise move.

The perfect timing for mating should be chosen and in order to do so, the female dog’s fertility and hormone levels should be measured. There will be a drastic drop of the chances of reproduction if the ovulation will be delayed. To make certain that your female dog is in the best of health, you can have her examined by a veterinarian.

When the female is in heat, mating should be started on the ninth to the thirteenth day. You can check with your veterinarian 3 weeks after the mating to confirm if your dog is already pregnant.

The place where puppies will be housed in the near future should also be prepared since you own the female dog. Always bear in mind that close attention is required for a successful breeding. Your success rate will most likely be reduced if you miss any important details.

Grooming your dog is an essential and rewarding part of ownership. Although many people are familiar with grooming basics, such as removing tangles and shampooing. There are many benefits you may not have thought about before.

The first thing is grooming is not just for improving the look of your dog’s coat. There are many health benefits as well when done regularly:

1. Grooming takes away dead hair and skin. It not only removes an unsightly and unwanted mess, it improves air circulation to your dog’s coat. This is essential in the summertime when it’s hot and humid.

2. You’ll also find that grooming increases the blood flow to hair follicles, which will improve the health of your dog’s whole coat.

3. It stimulates the lymphatic system, similar to the results a human would get from a deep tissue massage. We humans know how good that feels.

4. Another benefit of grooming, it will put your dog in a great mood. Combine this with your gentle voice and you’ll be helping to strengthen the bond between you.

5. A benefit many people don’t think about is that you will become more familiar with your dog’s body. You will be able to detect many health problems before these become serious issues.

6. Make sure that you brush and check every part of your dog. This includes their ears, eyes, coat and skin. Finding ticks or other insects attached to your dog can be extremely serious even deadly, so keep an eye out for these freeloaders.

7. While you’re at it, clip their nails. This gives you a chance to check the pads of their feet, noting any problems.

If you don’t have the essential tools or materials, no worry they can be found at your local pet supply stores. If you would rather shop online there are many sites that offer the equipment for sale as well, an added bonus to online shopping is most provide a lot of great information and advice.

If your interested in learning more, check your local community college, they may offer a program to teach dog owners how to groom.

You may find that you enjoy it so much you move beyond the basics and become an excellent groomer, you might think about starting your own service. Many pet owners don’t have the time to groom their dogs themselves, but know it is a necessity. Turn your passion into dollars as you groom others’ pets.

Providing this service could become a part time or even full time business venture. Either way, as a business or just personal satisfaction you will be confident knowing your own dog is being properly cared for. Set aside a regular brushing grooming appointment time, you’ll be surprised to find how quickly you best friend will learn this scheduled appointment and be anxiously awaiting.

Begin when they’re puppies; many rewards go hand in hand with grooming, so start as soon as possible.

‘Alpaca’ is becoming a common word, the majority now starting to recognise that soapy softness of quality alpaca fibre whether it be knitted baby wear or fine spun shawls. Alpaca is undoubtedly a magnificent natural material to work with and to wear, the warmth provided by the hollow core of the fibre being second to none.

This fine, lustrous and crimpy fleece grows on the back of these South American camelids and is sheared off once a year. One animal can yield up to seven kilos of fleece- but this doesn’t necessarily translate into seventy balls of quality knitting yarns: Alpacas are sheared from head to toe, with a decrease in the quality of the fibre down the legs.

It’s fantastic that alpaca is moving to the forefront of fashion, demand for luxury fibre knitting yarns is higher than it has ever been, but designers and consumers alike crave the ‘good stuff’. Until recently alpaca breeders and textile workers scratched their heads to discover a use for the waste fibre left after the ‘blanket’ fleece is removed. These fibers tend to be harsher, less crimpy and when worn next to the skin are itchy. Obviously including the leg fibre in a spin batch would downgrade the rest of your soft fibre- so it is piled separately at the back of the shearing shed. Over the course of shearing a whole herd this waste fibre can amount to a significant amount of fleece.

Some use it as insulation- that hollow core working as well at keeping a home warm as keeping your toes warm. Others use it to stuff pet bedding- lucky pooch! The third alterative is to accept it as a lower-grade fibre, lacking the softness and lustre of the back fibre, but still use it within textiles. This coarse fibre can be felted, wet felted or needle felted, or alternately spun up into a heavier knitting yarn and then knitted and felted. The result is a much heavier and hairier fabric, it has greater structure and is consequently more hard wearing. This can be used for the likes of handbags, slippers, Wellington-boot insoles or even teddy bears and jewellery. Alpaca is a versatile fibre and when treated in various different ways can become unrecognisable as the same fibre. Whether knitted, felted or woven, alpaca gives you exceptional results, bringing to your product warmth, texture, and creating a desire in people to touch it. This type of alpaca can be bought at much lower prices than fine alpaca, and anyone interested in textiles will love the challenge of a different type of material.

Some people researching alpacas as an worthwhile business investment are concerned that the alpaca industry may go bust like the emu schemes of the 1980s. (Emus are a large, ostrich-like bird.) Actually, alpacas are not only a different species, but also a completely different market with a viable, well-established end product–luxurious fiber.

The original strategy for emus was to create an alternative market for meat, like chickens and turkeys. But an emu meat market never materialized in the U.S. You never saw emu roasts in your supermarket, packages of emu drumsticks, smoked emu in the deli, or emu on a restaurant menu. That’s because the emu industry created the infrastructure to harvest the meat and byproducts, process the meat for consumption or get it properly packaged for supermarkets. The emu industry never bought advertising to bring the meat to the public awareness and create a demand.

Emus also produce a valuable oil on their rump pad, although they must be slaughtered to get this oil. However the emu industry never developed an infrastructure to process and market the oil. So there was no real profit from emu oil.

Alpaca is an Elite Fiber

Alpacas produce fiber, not meat. So you don’t have to slaughter the animals to obtain end product. The alpaca lifespan is 15 to 20 years, producing elite, luxurious fleece that can be sheared and processed into textiles year after year. Alpaca fiber is hypoallergenic. Many peolple, who are allergic to sheep’s wool, can comfortably wear alpaca next to their skin. In addition, alpaca is an elite fiber that in demand by fashion houses worldwide.

A raw, unprocessed alpaca fleece usually brings in enough money to pay for an alpaca’s feed and upkeep. Selling alpaca fleece gives the alpaca rancher another revenue stream for his operation. Processing raw fleece into yarn and then into finished apparel adds value that results in higher profits.

Run Away Emu Breeders Market

One female emu can lay 30 to 50 eggs each year. This means that an emu rancher must find buyers for the eggs and/or hatched offspring of each hen. Thus the U.S. emu flock grew too quickly to allow for stable market values. The demand for emus could not keep up with the supply. Since there was no emu meat processing infrastructure, emu ranchers ran out of emu-buying customers. The rapid reproductive rate of emus also made it difficult to keep up with expenses and needed equipment.

In contrast, alpacas give birth to just one baby a year. So alpaca herds grow slowly, yet the demand for alpaca fiber in the fashion industry remains high and is even growing. New U.S alpaca ranches are growing by about 30% per year, with the average start-up ranch purchasing a start-up herd of 2 to 5 animals. Demand for alpacas greatly exceeds supply. Based on the slow, but steady growth rate of the overall U.S. alpaca herd, demand will continue to exceed supply for many years to come.

Closed Alpaca Registry

In addition to the run-away emu growth rate, emus and emu eggs were still being imported into the U.S., which flooded the market. This was a terrible situation for emu farmers, who had no way to sell the meat, and no new emu farms to sell live birds and eggs. Many emu farmers quit the business and turned their birds loose into the woods.

The North American alpaca industry has closed its animal registration book, the Alpaca Registry, Inc. (ARI), to imports. This means that only alpacas, whose parents are already in the stud book can be registered. Having an unregistered alpaca is like having a house without a deed or a car without an owner’s certificate. A closed registry protects North American alpaca farms from seeing their alpaca investment lose value in a market flooded with imports.

AOBA National Marketing

Another way that the alpaca industry differs from the emu industry is that it has a well-organized national marketing organization, the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Organization (AOBA), which drives the alpaca industry in the following ways:

Purchases TV advertising on satellite that markets into rural areas.

Certifies alpaca halter and fleece shows throughout the USA

Publishes the Alpaca Farm and Ranch Guide for people researching alpaca investment and provides well-qualified sales leads to AOBA members

Publishes Alpacas Magazine to promote alpaca ranching and apparel

Hosts an annual Fiber to Fashion conference to promote alpaca fiber and apparel.

Herdsire Stud Fees

Unlike emus, alpacas herdsire can earn significant stud fees. The value of an alpaca is directly related to the quality of it’s genetic charactistics. The quality of an animal’s fiber is greatly determined by its genetics. Fortunately, a female with mediocre fleece can produce babies with much better fleece characteristic by simply breeding her to a superior herdsire. There can be dramatic fiber improvement in just one generation. This makes it possible to improve the genetics of the offspring, and thus improve the overall value of a rancher’s herd on a continual basis. So breeding females “up” to a superior male is important in the alpaca industry.

The majority of ranches own less than 10 females. So alpaca ranches, especially smaller ranches, often need to purchase breeding services. Either they don’t own a herdsire, or their males are too closely related to the females, which would result in in-breeding. It’s very common for a stud service fee to cost between $1000 to $2000, with really top national herdsire services going for $3500 to $5000.

In short, the prognosis for the alpaca industry is excellent because it is based on the sound market principles of steady herd growth rate, demand exceeding supply, and the increasing value of elite fiber.

Virginia Lyons owns Able Oaks Ranch Alpacas in East Texas. She has been breeding and raising elite alpacas and miniature llamas with persistently fine fiber since 2003. Virginia is an experienced weaver and teaches workshops and hosts free events about alpaca ranching, alpaca fiber, and much more.

You’ve learned a lot about alpacas. You’ve done your financial homework. Perhaps you’ve found breeders you can trust and work with, and picked out your starter herd – or perhaps that is still underway. Before your herd arrives, it’s time to get ready. Here, we’ll talk about pasture, shelter, water, and hay.

Planning your pastures: Think fencing first. Alpacas normally will not challenge a reasonable fence, so 48″, no-climb horse fence supported on t-posts is great for this job. A small tractor, a fence stretcher, a post-hole digger, and a good pair of gloves and fencing pliers, and you’ll have the job under control. Work with the breeders you’ve met to develop a pasture plan based on your herd composition and pasture health. Just pets? One pasture might do, but having more will let you rotate the herd to replenish the pastures. Breeding stock? You’ll want separate pastures for boys and girls, and possibly another for mothers with nursing crias. You’ll need access to shelter, water, and hay in each pasture. You’ll also want a convenient way to move your herds from pasture to barn or catch pen for toe shearing, injections, vet visits, and so on. Design your pastures with exercise in mind. They should be shaped so that your alpacas can get in a good run – great for body conditioning!

Planning your shelters: Yes, you can accuse alpacas of not coming in out of the rain sometimes. But that doesn’t mean shelter is optional. Think summer shelter and winter shelter in each pasture. What does shelter mean? A roof and enough walls to break the wind and keep out sun, rain, and snow. A floor that will stay dry, with a surface suitable for cushing. Coarse gravel is not a good idea, nor is concrete slab. Horse stall mats (3/4″ recycled rubber) are great. Packed dirt works fine, so long as it is reliably dry. Make sure that there’s room enough for however many animals will have to share the shelter. Alpacas don’t tend to line up nice and parallel, all in a bunch. Most important is to make sure that all your animals can stay cool enough in hot weather, and keep dry. Good air circulation is key. Also important is to make sure that very young animals can stay warm in very cold weather (though coats can help with this). We’ll talk about barn layout in another article.

Planning for water: Alpacas must have a ready supply of clean, fresh water. Automatic filling equipment is not needed, so long as someone reliably keeps the tanks or buckets filled. One thing we’ve found useful is keeping the water supply up off the ground. Our buckets are suspended at about shoulder height for our younger animals (26″ to 30″), and we use the 24″ tall version of metal stock tanks. This keeps animals from pawing at the water, making it muddy. In case someone spills a bucket or your stock tank springs a leak, it’s a good idea to have a second water supply in place. In winter? Frozen water is a problem for your alpacas and your tanks and buckets. Alpacas also tend to drink too little if the water is too cold. Consider heated buckets (about $50 each) or stock tank heaters (about $90 each) in cold climates. Finally, it’s a good idea to be able to control access to all your herd’s water. Sometimes, medications like coccidiastats are administered through drinking water, so you’ll want to ensure that your alpacas use the right supply.

Planning for hay: Hay should be available all day, every day. Here in the Pacific Northwest, we see annual consumption of 700 to 800 pounds per alpaca – roughly 1 ton of hay per 2.5 to 3 alpacas. What kind of hay? Alpacas do best with a diet of 8% to 12% protein. That makes orchard grass an ideal choice. Second or third cutting orchard grass avoids seeds and stems, and we’ve found this generates less waste. Cost? In 2007, prices here in the Northwest for 2nd or 3rd cutting orchard grass were at $260/ton. In late 2008, prices stood at $300/ton. Handling? We recommend what many hay suppliers call two-string bales. These weigh in the neighborhood of 80 to 90 pounds each. The larger, three-string bales (110-130 pounds each) are harder for a single person to move. A garden cart can be your friend when it comes to moving hay! Storage? Hay needs to be stored dry, preferably not directly on a concrete slab. We use recycled wooden pallets for hay storage, and we keep the hay a few inches away from barn walls. This improves air circulation, helping to avoid mildew.

There are many opinions about which hay feeding stations work best. Tub-style feeders, where alpacas graze on hay in tubs below head level, can help keep hay out of that spot just above the shoulders where it tends to collect and make a mess. On the other hand, wall-style feeders don’t take up as much floor space in your barn, and let animals graze with their heads and necks in a more upright position. If you’re handy, you can build your own. We did, and you can see an example in our Video section at our ranch website.

Nutritionally, orchard grass won’t do it alone for breeding animals and young animals. Supplements in the form of grain and mineral salt can make up the difference. For pregnant and nursing dams, and for young cria, you may also want to have a few bales of alfalfa on hand. We’ll talk about grain and salt in another article. Good luck! We hope this helps you get prepared!

Have you ever considered visiting alpaca farms or alpaca breeders, or even starting your own alpaca breed business? If you have but are just not sure where to start, then it would be wise to dig in and really do some research before attempting to do so.

There are a lot of questions that have to be asked about the nature of the business that you intend to start. For instance, you may want to ask yourself what type of business you are actually trying to start up. Are you looking to run alpaca farms, alpaca breeders businesses, or do you just want to sell alpaca supplies.

These are the types of questions you need to ask yourself before you decide to start your own business. The alpaca industry is not a cheap industry to tap into, and purchasing alpacas can be very expensive depending on the gender and quality of animal you are looking at purchasing.

There are a number of factors that come into play when starting up your own alpaca farm. Some of the things you’ll have to put on your list are equipment and supplies, fencing, food and water, medications and other medical expenses, acreage, shelters, insurance, and others. As you can probably already tell, starting a business of this type isn’t cheap.

If you just want to sell alpaca supplies, don’t think you’ll be able to do it for little cost, it is still going to be expensive because you have to think about the cost of inventory, insurance, required licenses, equipment, and more. Then after all of that has been taken care of, you still have to get people to buy your supplies so you’ll have to spend time and money marketing your business.

Before you jump into the process of starting your own business, whether that be alpaca farms, alpaca breeders, or supplies, make sure you learn about doing so. Having the knowledge of how to start a business in the most efficient way possible will help the process go much more smoothly.

There are a lot of people who mistake alpacas for a pyramid scheme. Government agencies can decide whether or not they are. Meanwhile, there’s no compulsion for anybody to invest in alpacas; you could always consult an attorney before you decide to.

In a pyramid scheme, you sell a dream to people, who, in their turn, sell it to others. The more people that subscribe to the scheme, under you, the more money you make. In fact, you don’t sell any product in order to make money.

In contrast, alpacas are physical products. If you need proof, consider the fact that they retail for as much as $15,000 each. If a buyer of an alpaca could speculate on it, and hope to sell it to someone else for a higher price, alpacas could perhaps qualify as a pyramid scheme.

People don’t buy alpacas for their intrinsic value but for the fiber they produce. The fiber, which is non-allergenic, and has a luxurious feel, generates six times the warmth of wool.

And this is the reason that the market has valued these animals so highly over the past 20 years. At present, the fiber doesn’t sell for much – the US national alpaca herd is not large enough to support development of large mills to process the fiber in bulk. And though the fiber is highly desired, there are not enough processing plants to meet this demand.

The market for alpaca fiber in the U.S. is expected to grow in direct proportion with the size of the alpaca herd. And this is likely to rise substantially in the next five to ten years.

The many alpaca shows are proof of the confidence alpaca breeders have that they are on to a good thing. Hence, they make every effort to produce the best quality of fiber. Overall, the confidence of breeders in the future value of their investment is reflected in the high price alpacas command.

Far from being a pyramid scheme, alpaca rearing is an investment in a physical product that could earn you the best possible returns.

When it comes to alpaca breeding, then there are not too many people that are familiar with it. Many will just stop and wonder what alpaca really is and what do the alpaca breeders do. Well, if you are that curious and you still didn’t get the answer yet, alpaca is just a species of llamas. People have discovered the benefits of breeding such animals for years now and the llamas are mostly bred for their alpaca fiber. They are very important for us humans and have their place in our normal daily lives.

Thus, knitted materials that are very similar to wood and also woven materials are made out of it. If you live in Peru, then you are a very lucky man as here there are over fifty two different fiber colors of this llama. There are twelve in Australia and in the United States they are marketed in sixteen colors. They have successfully helped alpaca breeding grow very much over the years and now they have their place in the industry that is very much appreciated by people around the world, finding a use in these rare and high quality fibers.

Talking about breeding llamas, the breeding pattern is quite unique. Many other animals are just used to breed in a standing position, but when it comes to the alpacas, they are breeding on the floor for ten or fifty minutes. Thus, the female alpacas will follow a sternal position and the male will lie on top of her. They are also induced ovulates and they will not ovulate until there will be a male around to help them out with the breeding. This is due to the fact that the hormone system of female alpacas and their neutral pathways will just get induced in the moment they will engage into the act of breeding. Of course, there is not only a single approach when it comes to alpaca mating in an alpaca farm. Thus, if a good number of such events will be achieved, there will be plenty alpacas for sale out there and that’s because line breeding alpacas are very sought after.

One other method that is not so widely known is the pasture breeding, but aside from the fact that this is not a very well known method, it is the most natural of them all. When we are talking about hand breed, this is just at the opposite spectrum of natural and unfortunately it is the most common system used. Of course, each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Another thing that has an important role in the breeding of alpacas are the hereditary pattern and of course, the genetics. Thus, it would be far better that breeding between alpaca species that feature similar qualities would be encouraged, rather that hybridization.

Have a great day!

When one hears the word “Alpacas”, typically the first thing that comes to mind is the common llama. This is a common misconception because, although alpacas do tend to resemble their llama cousins because they are in the same family of mammal, they are a different species altogether. In recent years alpaca farming has become more and more popular amongst those in Western civilizations, as their fur is highly coveted for the making of textiles. In this article, we want to talk to you about the mighty alpacas and show you just how amazing this stout little animal really is.

The History Of Alpacas

Closely related to the llama, alpacas are a much smaller camelid which appeal to connoisseurs everywhere because of their long, luxurious wool. This wool is used in the creation of everything from blankets and sweaters, to scarves, coats, and even bedding in many parts of the world. Although alpacas were once prized for their meat (which is considered a delicacy in many cultures), and raised by many in much the same way as we raise cattle, the alpacas are now a protected species, and as such are no longer raised and hunted for their sweet meat. Once found only in far off regions of the Andes, Peru and Chile, alpaca farms are now cropping up all over North America, Australia and the UK.

The Appeal Of Alpaca Farming

Of course, when you first think of farming, I’m sure the last thing that goes through your mind are alpacas; but the fact of the matter is that alpaca farming has gained in popularity over the last few decades. Even though they are no longer raised for their meat, the wool of alpacas is still highly coveted in the textile industry. Used to make many of the same things that sheep’s wool is, alpaca wool is both softer and more durable, making it ideal for many uses in making top of the line clothing and bedding.

Little Known Facts About Alpacas

In addition to the luxurious wool they provide, alpacas are also quite tame and are often made into family pets. They are social animals who typically live in family groups within the herd. Also, unlike their llama and camel cousins, alpacas are not typically prone to spitting. They certainly can spit, but typically don’t unless they feel disdain for another alpaca. The primary cause for this is because spitting brings up stomach acids which leave a foul taste and odour in an alpaca’s mouth. Additionally, alpacas are very hygienic animals, and can often be house trained to be kept as pets.

As you can see, alpacas are a very interesting animal with many uses in this world. Whether your interest in alpacas is due to a desire to raise them for yourself, or simply to learn more about the wonderful animal that provides millions with warm wool, you have to admit that they are fascinating and beautiful creatures.
